學習目標
Phonetics and phonology are vital fields that bridge linguistic science and real-world applications. These disciplines not only offer diverse career opportunities in areas such as speech-language pathology, the development of AI-based language technologies, and the preservation of endangered languages, but also deepen our understanding of the sound systems of human language. By investigating the sound structure of languages, phonetics and phonology provide insights into the mental representations of speech, making them indispensable in both academic research and practical applications. Core Competencies and Course Objectives: • Describe the mechanisms of speech production, the processes of speech perception, and the principles of acoustics. • Analyze and apply phonological theories, identify phonological rules, interpret linguistic data, and examine phonological patterns across languages. • Apply phonetic or phonological theories to real-world contexts by designing and conducting relevant experiments, and complete an original research project.

Course Selection Guidelines

The capstone requirement for the Phonetics and Phonology specialization includes two advanced courses: Experimental Phonetics and Experimental Phonology. Students are required to complete one of these two courses. Both are categorized as research-based and practice-oriented seminars, and both culminate in a formal research paper.
The primary distinction between Experimental Phonetics and Experimental Phonology lies in their research focus and objectives:

a. Research Focus: Experimental Phonetics investigates the physical and physiological properties of speech, emphasizing aspects such as acoustics, articulation, and perception. It uses experimental methods to test phonetic theories. Experimental Phonology, on the other hand, explores how phonological structures are formed and represented in language, employing experimental approaches to test phonological theories.

b. Research Objectives: The goal of Experimental Phonetics is to understand the physiological and physical mechanisms of speech, with a focus on articulatory dynamics, acoustic variables, and auditory perception. Experimental Phonology aims to examine the cognitive and psychological mechanisms underlying phonological rules and patterns, using experimental methods to evaluate the validity of phonological theories.
